CHANDIGARH: No. That is what medical science faculty of Panjab University had to say to the approval of syllabi for add-on courses in clinical diagnostic methods being run in colleges, at least for the time being. A total of 38 different add-on courses are being run in various colleges for BA, BCom students. They were allowed by UGC in 2004-2005. Dr KK Talwar, dean of the faculty, said it is important to check whether the colleges have proper infrastructure and trained teachers for these courses, before clearing the syllabi.
He said: "It's not that we are against vocational courses, but the faculty would like to know how have they (colleges) managed sophisticated equipment to run such courses."
Most members of the medical science faculty were surprised at the syllabi which includes training in tests like EMG, EEG, ECG and TMT. Training for tests like EMG is not even available in some of the hospitals here. These add-on courses are being run in some of the affiliated colleges as certificate, diploma and advance diploma courses under the career-oriented programme of University Grants Commission. Some of the faculty members said there is a race among colleges to start more of such courses as they get special financial assistance from UGC for these. One member said: "By running courses like clinical diagnostics' we can only produce RMPs" Doubts were also raised about the proposal to teach health education to students of fine arts as well as the add-on course in physiotherapy. Interestingly, all these courses are also listed in the annual report of Panjab University.
